Read the median before you read anything else
Half of every pressure washing company on Google has 9 reviews or fewer. That single line reframes most of the anxiety owners carry about this trade. You are not competing against a wall of established brands. You are competing against a field where 17.8% have not collected a single review and 51.3% are still in single digits.
The catch is that the median is not the target. Google shows three businesses in the map pack, and in any metro with real volume those three sit far up the curve. The 75th percentile is 36 reviews and the 90th is 103. That is your actual bar. The distance from 9 to 103 is roughly one review per working day for four months, which is a scheduling habit rather than a marketing budget.
Ignore the mean of 39.1. It is dragged upward by a small number of multi-crew franchises and exterior-cleaning companies that also do windows and gutters. Only 0.7% of listings have passed 500 reviews, and 10.4% have passed 100. Percentiles describe your street; the mean describes nobody.
Ratings will not separate you
The average rating in the dataset is 4.9 stars, 79.8% of rated companies sit at a clean 5.0, and 94.9% are at 4.5 or above. A perfect rating in this trade is not an achievement, it is the default, usually because the company has nine reviews and all nine came from neighbors. Only 2.6% fall below 4.0.
So stop protecting the 5.0 and start growing the count. A company at 4.8 with 140 reviews wins the click against a 5.0 with 11 every time, and Google appears to agree. The number that should worry you instead is 14.6%: that is the share of listings with no rating at all, which is what a brand-new trailer operation looks like on the day it registers. If your profile still looks like that after a season, homeowners assume you just started.
The website gap is the widest gap in the trade
31.7% of pressure washing companies link no website from their Google profile. Among those that do, most are on their own domain, and a small remainder point at a Facebook page or a free builder page.
Then the split gets stark. Companies with a website carry a median of 17 reviews. Companies without one carry 2. We are not claiming the website manufactures reviews. Both are symptoms of the same thing: an operator who treats this as a business rather than a side hustle with a trailer. But it means the missing website is the fastest way to read a competitor. If the top three listings around you include one with no site and four reviews, that spot is available.
Hours, photos and the field that quietly hurts you
63.4% of pressure washing listings show no hours at all. That is by far the worst profile field in this niche, and it costs calls, because a listing with no hours gives Google nothing to display and gives a homeowner no reason to believe anyone will answer. Only 28.4% list Saturday hours and 18.4% list Sunday, in a trade where most homeowners are home on exactly those two days.
Photos are the opposite story: 95.3% have at least one image, so having pictures is not an edge. Having 40 real before-and-after pairs, geotagged across your service radius and added weekly, still is. And 20.2% publish an email, which matters more here than in other trades because property managers and HOA boards send bid requests by email, not by phone.
What to do with this
- Pull up your own listing and write down four numbers: review count, rating, whether a website is linked, and whether hours are set.
- Place yourself on the curve. Under 9 is the bottom half. Under 36 is the bottom three quarters. 103 and up is where map-pack winners live.
- If you are in the 31.7% with no website, fix that before you buy a single ad click. A five-page site with tap-to-call, a service page per surface and honest price ranges is one week of work.
- Set Saturday hours today. You are competing with the 63.4% who list none and the majority who list weekdays only, on the days homeowners are actually home.
- Start a review habit rather than a review campaign: one ask at the last house of every day, at the truck, before you pull away. The reviews guide has the exact wording.
- Only then spend on ads, and run the calculator first so you know what your missed calls are already costing. Paid traffic pointed at a thin profile just funds your competitor's education.
Method
This report aggregates 27,078 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for pressure washing companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
